Bob the Builder was created by British television writer and producer Keith Chapman in the late 1980s. He thought it might be fun for a JCB he saw on a job site one day to come to life. The animated children's TV series is a stop motion 3D creation made entirely of clay produced by HOT animation and distributed by HIT Entertainment and debuted on the BBC in 1999. The show is targeted toward preschool aged children and introduces basic concepts such as conflict resolution, socialization, cooperation & teamwork.
Officially an international success, it's become one of the top-rated preschool programs in more than 130 countries worldwide. Bob and his crew of personified construction machines say they can fix it!
In the UK, Bob is voiced by Neil Morrissey (who also narrates Maisy Mouse). The North America Bob is voiced by comedian Greg Proops who took over for William Dufris.
Trivia: Music is composed by Roland Lee. The show's theme became a hit pop song remaining #1 on the British charts 3 weeks for a total of 22 weeks. The original concept was Bob with his colleague Lenny operated the machinery. Bob was older with a mustache and Wendy was a ditzy secretary for the business. The BBC initially had them drop the voices for the machines as commercial construction vehicles can't talk. There was a backlash, the voices were reinstated, and Wendy & Bob both changed for the better including that mustache! *Sigh* Will they ever get together?
